Arragons Cycle Hire

Arragons | 08/08/2018 16:32:00

Cycle Hire Banner

We are delighted to announce that we are now offering Cycle Hire from the beautiful surroundings of Lowther Castle. The venture coincides with the launch on the Lowther Estate of a network of dedicated cycling and walking trails. This will enable visitors, particularly families, to enjoy the beauty and unspoilt terrain of the Lowther Estate in Cumbria.

Hand in hand with this network comes the launch of Arragons Cycle Hire at Lowther Castle – an enterprise that is being managed and run in tandem with our family run store in Penrith. Under this new venture, visitors to the castle will be able to hire a range of bikes, from trail bikes (Scott Aspect) or, for junior riders, superlight mountain bikes (Saracen Mantra) to a selection of pedal assist electric bikes (Saracen Juiced, Ridgeback X3) which are ideal for anyone who cannot face the more uphill stretches of the estate.

Please note that after hiring bikes and exploring the trails, you can enjoy 10% off admission to the Castle & Gardens (including the adventure playground) on production of your bike-hire receipt.

LOWTHER ESTATE TRAILS

The trails that run through the Lowther Estate embrace all that is beautiful in the lovely Lowther valley. Cycle-paths snake through the ancient woodland and pastures of Lowther Park, following the stunning contours of the landscape.  All trails have been created for full family enjoyment and are colour-graded in accordance with national cycling standards. There are signposts at every junction, with destinations and length in miles clearly shown.  In addition to this, there are some signposted circular routes that go beyond the estate boundaries. Hirers can also create their own rides beyond Lowther and into the Eden Valley or Lake District.

LOWTHER CASTLE

Of the many treasures waiting to be discovered in the English Lake District, Lowther Castle is a gem.  Built at the turn of the 19th century, on the site of two previous houses, the castle was a grand affair boasting a room for every day of the year.  Its gardens were the envy of the north.  But in 1957 the castle was demolished.  Just the façade and outer walls remained standing and for over half a century, the place was empty – home only to chickens, pigs and the odd bat.  The gardens were lost to wilderness.

Seventy years on from its demolition, Lowther Castle is now one of the most intriguing visitor attractions in the country.  Dramatic ruins, gardens within gardens, an adventure playground to rival the best in the land.  For visitors young and old (and four-legged), Lowther Castle offers plenty to enjoy. And when all of you are ready for a rest, you can retreat to the café and have some delicious food, before taking to the gift shop and indulging in one last treat.

Lowther Castle & Gardens are open every day from 10am to 4pm in winter and 10am to 5pm in summer.  For castle and garden entry fees, click here.  Last entry to the gardens 1 hour before closing.  Shop, café, courtyard and parking free.

Location & Opening Times

Now we’ve hit Autumn, the Hire Centre is not staffed and won’t be open daily. But don’t worry, you can still enjoy the bikes. Reserve you bikes as normal, either via our website or through the shop on 01768 890344 and we will have everything you need at the time you select.

We will open for the Half term Holidays at the end of October, and the Centre will be fully open with more bikes in March 2019.

The hire centre is open to bookings Thursday – Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Last hire is 3pm.

The Hire Centre is based along side the courtyard next to the Castle.

Your acceptance of the equipment and routes

Our bikes and equipment are hired in good condition and are in full working order.  Before leaving the hire centre, please satisfy yourself that the equipment meets your needs and skills and that you are happy to proceed with the hire.

The equipment hired is only for routes intended for the bikes, please respect their limitations. You are welcome to take the bikes on a cycle route of your choice and are not limited to the Lowther trails. It is your responsibility to ensure the bike is suitable for your planned route.

You accept complete responsibility during the period of hire for the safe custody of the equipment and for any loss, theft or damage (howsoever caused). You are responsible for the security of the bicycle and must lock it to a fixed object whenever unattended and keep the equipment safeguarded at all times. You must return the equipment by the specified time and date. Any loss, theft, damage or accident should be notified to the hire company immediately and in the case of theft or accident to the nearest police station too.

Your booking is accepted on the understanding you accept the risks and hazards inherent in cycling either on the road or off the road, adverse weather conditions, and poor condition of roads and off-road trails.

Loss or damage

You undertake not to misuse the equipment and to return it with all the accessories in the same condition as it was when received by you (ordinary wear and tear accepted.)

In event of any damage during the hire period, howsoever caused, the hirer agrees to pay the cost of repair or damage. If a bike or equipment is lost during the hire period, howsoever caused, the hirer agrees to pay the cost of replacement at replacement cost price.

Insurance

Insurance to cover yourself against accident or loss is available, at additional cost, at the the point of hire. We strongly recommend this insurance is taken out.

Recovery

In the event of a breakdown, other than the result of your misuse, we will use reasonable endeavours to make roadside repairs or provide a replacement bike.  However, puncture repair during hire is not a service provided free of charge.

We have equipped each bike with spare tube, pump and puncture repair kit and leaflets on puncture repair are available. Call outs for puncture repair will be charged at £30 each.

Personal Risk of Injury

You accept that cycling has risks and confirm that you are a competent cyclist. You should not ride if you are in ill health, have a disability likely to affect ability to cycle, or your eyesight is not up to the standard required by a road driving test. Do not ride under the influence of alcohol, strong medication or other drugs. It is strongly advised that you wear a helmet and use other appropriate safety equipment and clothing.

Cycling carries with it an element of risk of injury.  The hirer indemnifies Arragons Cycle Hire against any injuries sustained which are beyond its control.

The liability of Arragons Cycle Hire is limited to the equipment provided, the hirer will satisfy themselves that everything is in full working order before leaving the premises.

Payments, cancellations & exchange

Hire fees are to be paid for at the time of booking.  Bikes are only confirmed once payment has been made.

If bikes are not returned by the specified time and date, the cost of hire shall be charged on a pro rata basis until return. Any late return, replacement or repair costs or insurance excess payments will be chargeable.

Reservations are non refundable.  However, we will be happy to transfer your hire within 30 days if you are able to give more than 24 hours notice of the cancellation. If you do not re-book within 30 days, your booking will be cancelled and no refund will be given.

All payments are to be made by either credit or debit card.  Cash cannot be taken.  This is in accordance with our insurance requirements.

Hire Period

We have two periods for hire: Up to three hours, and full day.  Full day is from the hours of 10:00 to 17:00  Bikes must be returned within the agreed period to avoid additional charges being imposed.

Age limits and restrictions on hirers

We require any child under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.  We reserve the right to refuse a hire booking if we believe the main hirer to be under the age of 18 and is unable to prove otherwise.  There will be no refund as the terms of our booking will have been agreed, and this point is clearly stated on the booking form.

The hiring of any equipment will be deemed to be acceptance of these conditions and agreement to be bound by them

Your responsibilities

Please follow the highway code. Do not ride on pavements, against traffic, or more than two abreast.

Do not run red lights.

Be courteous to pedestrians and other road users.

Ride responsibly: do not attempt any manoeuvres beyond your skill level or the bike’s specific capabilities.

You accept full responsibility if you ignore any of the above and we are not liable for death or injury to any person or loss or damage to any property that results. Save in respect of liability for personal injury or death resulting from our negligence, the hire company’s liability to you whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty or otherwise is limited to the cost of hire. You agree to indemnify us against any liabilities, costs, expenses, damages and losses arising out of or in connection with the death or injury to any person or any damage to property resulting from your hire or use of the equipment. We advise that you do not ride without personal and third party liability insurance.
