Ergon SM E-MTB Sport Saddle Review

Choosing the right saddle for you can be super difficult and for electric mountain bikes, there aren't a lot to choose from. Ergon has recently launched their new SM E-Mountain Saddle range. Within the range there are 4 saddles; 2 men's and 2 women's. There's an E-Mountain Sport and an E-Mountain Core Prime for both men and women.

I decided to test the Ergon SM E-Mountain Men Sport Saddle. Riders on E-MTBs typically remain seated through steeper and rougher terrain, so the saddle demands are different to non-electric mountain bike riders. As a result, Ergon developed their E-MTB Specific saddle range with many features.

The first obvious difference to the saddle is the large ramp on the rear of the saddle. This significantly improves your seated position when climbing and holds you in the ideal position for those climbs, saving you energy holding that position. The nose of the saddle has also been designed to be wider as your seating position often shifts forward in extremely steep sections.

I found this to really work on those steeper climbs making you feel more planted on the saddle and more comfortable.

The next feature is the deep relief channel. This progressive relief channel deepens towards the rear leading to an opening through the shell of the saddle. This gives the saddle shell more forgiveness as well as specifically relieves perineal pressures. Too much pressure in this area can lead to discomfort and numbness.

I found that this eliminated the numbness completely and had no discomfort whilst riding, just as Ergon said it would.

Now on to the padding...

Its fantastically comfortable! According to Ergon "The new OrthoCell® material helps you to achieve your best performance without any complaints. These inlays, which are more durable and lighter than gel, ensure the best pressure distribution and provide the highest rebound force. This means they follow the movements of the pelvis with every turn of the crank, but return to their starting position very quickly." This is exactly what its like, its feels like you are connected to the saddle and the bike! The orthopaedic foam is ergonomic for mountain biking, but still extremely durable.

I give this Saddle a 5 out of 5!

What is the difference between the models and Men's and Women's?

The women's E-MTB Sport has a women's specific Relief Channel positioned further forward to suit pelvic anatomy, biomechanics and sensitive soft tissue and has all the same fantastic features as the men's one reviewed above.

The E-MTB Core Prime saddles are Dynamic Saddles With Ergonomic Core. Preventing Numbness in the Soft Tissue Area, Reduced Sit Bone Pressure, Medical Back Support and Floating Motion Support.

As the first bike saddles ever, the 2020 Ergon Core models have been awarded with the seal of quality called “Campaign for Healthier Backs “by the Association Forum Healthy Back – Better Living and Federal Association of German Back Schools.

The floating TwinShell concept with the Ergonomic Core supports the natural pelvic movements while pedaling, actively relieves the sit bones, and reliably dampens bumps caused by the riding surface. They also have gender specific Relief Channels like the Sport Models.

Each saddle comes in 2 widths to suite different sized sit bones. To find out more information on what saddle suits you best, head over to Ergons Website https://www.ergonbike.com/en/product.html?w=mountain&a=saettel#smemountain-series
